HIPAA 5010/ICD-10
As you know, the Federal Government, through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), mandated the healthcare industry to upgrade core HIPAA transactions to 5010 standards by January 1, 2012 and recently announced that it will not initiate enforcement until June 30, 2012. In any case, MultiPlan is compliant and accepting 5010 files from our clients. CMS also has a mandate to update diagnosis and procedure coding standards to ICD-10 by October 1, 2013. While CMS has announced they are reviewing the ICD-10 compliance date for certain healthcare entities, MultiPlan continues to prepare for the change and conduct testing with our clients and at this time expects to be ready to accept files with ICD-10 codes by October 2013. National Provider Identifier Compliance
Providers are required to include their National Provider Identifier (NPI) on all electronic claims as mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Claims payers and clearinghouses, both of which are required to recognize a provider's NPI as the provider identifier on all electronic claims, may reject electronic claims that do not contain the provider's NPI. Although not yet required on paper claims, we recommend that providers include NPI on all paper claims to facilitate processing. MultiPlan uses NPI in our claim matching to achieve more accurate matches and ultimately, more timely reimbursements for our providers.
